VOCALISM and the NI Human Rights Commission run a series of workshops encouraging the protection of cultural rights and expression of cultural identity.
VOCALISM is a community project using music to explore the connections between people.
Following on from VOCALISM’s successful “Songs of the People” event at last year’s NIHRF, the 2016 programme includes a series of workshops across Belfast and culminates in a public showcase event.
Listening to each other’s songs can forge a peaceful but profound connection.
This groundbreaking workshop series is based on the pedagogy and philosophy of Musicians
Without Borders and the rights--‐based community approach of VOCALISM, and will be tailored to the hopes and expectations of the local participants. No two workshops are the same! These workshops will take place in a variety of community organisations across Belfast. No musical experience is needed to participate fully in the workshops, which will last for 3 hours (including A break). Activities will involve songwriting, singing, and drumming. The aim of the workshops for the participants is to write a song as a group, learn new skills, and enjoy music--‐making in its most communal form. At the showcase event in a city centre venue, each group will perform their piece and all workshop participants will perform a piece together.
