Dreams of Peace and Freedom

  • Black Box 18-22 Hill Street Belfast, Northern Ireland, BT1 2LA United Kingdom (map)

Join us in the Black Box, Belfast on the evening of Saturday 13th December for the closing event of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Festival – a performance of the wonderful ‘Dreams of Peace and Freedom’ by English Cabaret.

Dreams of Peace and Freedom - A song cycle celebrating the birth of modern human rights

This performance is part of a series to mark the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights and celebrate its protections.

A living commemoration of a living law, this beautiful song cycle offers a new way to view the Convention, telling its story through the words of its British creator David Maxwell Fyfe. It tells how its foundation lay in the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials where he was a Leading Prosecutor, and a resolution that such crimes would never be allowed to happen again. Born in Scotland, David Maxwell Fyfe was a lawyer and MP for West Derby. Through his personal papers, Sue Casson's ethereal music and archive film blend in this powerful celebration of the protections afforded by the Convention.

Created and performed by professional theatre company English Cabaret, which features a new generation of David’s family.

The Convention has played a significant role in the protection of Human Rights across Europe since its creation in 1950 and has was a central pillar of the Northern Ireland peace process and a key protection of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

Join us for a wonderful celebration of the Convention, of Human Rights, of humanities response to war and the role of David Maxwell Fyfe.
